The Hospital Pharmacy Director is responsible for the day to day operation of the pharmacy department. The position requires extensive contact with the administrator, medical staff, nursing service, hospital staff, and nonhospital personnel (vendors, auditors).

 

Essential Functions:

  1. Initiate, schedule, direct and control day-to-day operations of the department, perform in some part, and delegate remainder.
  2. Ensure adequate coverage of pharmaceutical services on an ongoing and in emergency situations according to the laws of the state and the needs of the hospital.
  3. Coordinate department’s activities with those of other departments. Coordinate with other management staff in establishing checks and quality controls to ensure quality of care. 
  4. Establishes and maintains policies and procedures for the pharmacy department including order entry, drug procurement, inventory, security, auditing, and reconciliation od dispenses versus administrations.
  5. Responsible for interviewing, hiring, and evaluating the staff pharmacists and pharmacy techs.
  6. Responsible for pharmacy staff orientation and staff development and documentation thereof. 
  7. Oversee the day-to-day performance of the hospital pharmacy staff to include performance reviews and counseling on employee issues such as attendance, appearance, conduct, etc. 
  8. Collaborate with the Pharmacy General Manager and Regional Pharmacy Manager on drug purchasing functions and assists in plans to affect economy in the purchase of drugs.
  9. Communicate with pharmaceutical representatives. Purchase and provide suitable storage of drugs and pharmaceutical supplies.
  10. Maintains strict control over distribution and accountability of controlled substances and maintenance of required records for controlled substances.
  11. Provides comprehensive review of patient drug orders to avoid possible errors in medication administration.
  12. Monitors drug therapy of patients and consults with physicians and nursing staff regarding problems with drug treatment regimens, including poison control.
  13. Responsible for the procurement, inventory control process, distribution, and storage of all medications. Remove expiring drugs from general distribution, prepare and send to reverse distributor daily.
  14. Ensures quality pharmaceutical services are provided to patients and works collaboratively with Medical Staff, Nursing, and other hospital departments on a regular basis.
  15. Reports, addresses, and suggests action plans for inefficiencies or violations of policies and procedures to administrative staff immediately upon discovery.
  16. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the profession by membership and participation in programs, attendance at meetings, seminars, lectures, etc., and reading the current literature.
  17. Serves on all relevant Oceans Healthcare Pharmacy Group committees as required and requested.
  18. May serve as Pharmacist-in-Charge for assigned facilities and assume associated responsibilities in compliance with industry standard and Company’s policies and procedures for role.
  19. Prepares and submits reports as necessary to any requiring department in an accurate and timely manner on an as needed basis.
  20. Assumes primary responsibilities for nursing, practitioner, and pharmacy staff in-service medication education, and staff scheduling.
  21. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Educational / Experience:

  • Bachelor's or Doctor of Pharmacy Degree.
  • Three to five years of hospital, including supervisory experience.
  • Licensed Pharmacist in the State of practice.
  • Eligible for licensure in other states.

Qualifications / Skills:

  • Trained in specialized functions of hospital pharmacy.
  • Proficient with pharmacy computer programs with ability to learn new programs efficiently.
  • Demonstrate leadership, administrative, and managerial skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and issues concurrently.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.  
  • Ability to adapt in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Familiar with a variety of the fields concepts, practices, and procedure.

Work Environment:

  • Subject to many interruptions. Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries. This position can be high paced and stressful; must be able to cope mentally and physically to atmosphere. Work requires spending approximately 90% or more of the time inside a building that offers protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
